“Don’t Give AIDS A Chance”
Don’t give AIDS a chance is Germany’s largest, most comprehensive health prevention campaign. It serves as a model for an effective nationwide prevention strategy with broad public impact. The Federal Agency for Health Education (BZgA) has been implementing the national HIV/AIDS education campaign since 1985. Other sexually transmitted infections (STIs) have also been a focus of the campaign’s communication measures for a number of years. The campaign combines mass communication and personal communication measures targeting various population groups.
The HIV/AIDS and other STIs prevention programme is designed as an umbrella campaign with universal, synergistic impacts. It is intended to be as sustainable as possible. Its primary goals are to prevent the further spread of HIV and other STIs and to create and strengthen a social climate of solidarity with affected persons instead of excluding them.
The division of efforts between the BZgA as a governmental institution and the NGO Deutsche AIDS-Hilfe (DAH) as a self-help organisation is a key element of successful HIV/AIDS prevention in Germany. As a governmental organisation, the
BZgA addresses the population as a whole; the self-help organisation
Deutsche AIDS-Hilfe (DAH) targets primarily persons and groups particularly affected by or at risk of the disease.
