World AIDS Day

World AIDS Day, first proclaimed by UNAIDS in 1988 and observed annually on December 1, is of special significance in the context of the campaign “Don’t Give AIDS A Chance”. The presence of AIDS in the public awareness and in the media reaches its peak on this day. World AIDS Day is supported by a large number of regional actions and accompanied by notably intensified reporting in the media.

On a national level, the Federal Centre for Health Education (BZgA), together with the Federal Ministry for Health (BMG), the German AIDS Foundation (DAS) and the Deutsche AIDS-Hilfe (DAH) focuses on high-impact community campaigns that centre around World AIDS Day. The current campaign is called “Live together positively. But play it safe!”

For the first time in Europe, the campaign places people with HIV in the spotlight as part of a national campaign to raise public awareness. The aim is to help those who are HIV positive or who suffer from AIDS to live in society without being excluded or discriminated against. The campaign aims to achieve this by:

  • Raising awareness of the issues
  • Making the exclusion of people with HIV and AIDS tangible and visible
  • Highlighting solutions for positive cooperation that are easy to implement
  • Educational activities
  • Inspiring others to think about and discuss the issues raised

The campaign sees HIV-positive people placed alone in the glare of the public gaze, where they bravely recount their genuine and impressive life stories. They inspire people to learn more about the issues by posing challenging questions on large-scale posters and in cinema and TV ads. The central communication platforms for this campaign are the campaign page www.welt-aids-tag.de and the campaign’s Facebook profile page, where users can express their opinions, discuss issues with ambassadors and find out more information. Video clips, portraits and press photos of the ambassadors reveal the complex reality of their lives and help people in Germany to interact with the issue of HIV in a responsible way.
